Tik Tok's ban will be loud
With news that the US Government might ban Tik Tok, many Tik Tok stars that have grown their popularity on the platform are starting to leave their native platform and take their fans into other social media platforms. Most of these influencers have been neglecting their presence outside of Tik Tok for years. Those that listened and followed Gary Vaynerchuck’s advice on being on multiple platforms aren’t as impacted as many other influencers.
There is a lot of confusion about the potential ban on Tik Tok and there will be a lot of wealth, status, and content lost if Tik Tok does get banned from the US. Regarding the reasons why Tik Tok is getting banned from the US, there are many theories about it. Many will say that Tik Tok’s numerous privacy issues are what prompted the US government to ban Tik Tok. Last year, the US military banned soldiers from using Tik Tok. Weeks ago, India banned Tik Tok. With many places banning Tik Tok for various reasons, it was inevitable that more and more nations will also participate in the Tik Tok ban bandwagon. Another potential reason why the US Government would want to ban Tik Tok is that users on the platform continued to attempt sabotaging President Trump’s rallies. Behavior like this shouldn’t be tolerated as those who want to attend the rally couldn’t attend, only to find that there were a lot of empty seats waiting for them. Since the rallies were free to attend, it drastically reduces the impacts the President can make to his fans as fewer people show up to the event. With privacy issues and the meddling of the political atmosphere, the US Government has reasons for having Tik Tok banned.
On the flip side, Tik Tok might have assets that can prevent the ban from happening. Earlier this year, Tik Tok named Kevin Meyer as the new CEO. Kevin Meyer was previously an executive at Disney. Being an American CEO of a Chinese company and being a great negotiator through his experiences at Disney, Kevin Meyer could be Tik Tok’s only hope (besides the people’s love for Charli D’Amelio). With his negotiating skills, the potential for American jobs to get lost, and the possibility for more civil unrest will provide great arguments to not ban Tik Tok.
Overall, the ban on Tik Tok has many implications to it. While the government wants to prioritize national security and reduce the meddling of elections, the government also has to account for the societal impacts from banning that social media platform. I don’t see Tik Tok getting down without a huge fight. The ban on Tik Tok will be loud.
