For most of the internet's history, legacy content distribution networks (CDNs) weren't built for developers to build applications that can be delivered to customers uniquely, speedily, on a global scale, and securely.

How? Because they weren't made to be programmable. This prevented developers from writing their own code or develop applications in the way that they wanted.

The founders of Fastly were developers and saw the issue. They decided to develop their edge cloud platform from the ground up and made it to where developers can write their own code and deliver their applications from the edge.

Also, by running their servers on a single software-defined network (not multiple networks), users experienced very few POPs (point of presences). In other words, there were very few connections being made while developers were running their business on Fastly's servers. This made the platform more efficient, interconnected, and scalable. That helped developers handle spikes in internet traffic. Plus, the platform can redirect traffic across different cloud providers or between cloud and data centers to reduce traffic congestion.

The platform's integrated security solution allows developers to see what's happening in their networks in real-time. This allows developers to act sooner against security threats.

Fastly has made onboarding and implementation really easy for developers. Within minutes, developers are accepted into the platform and everything is done online, making the experience pleasant.

Edge computing is the railroad network of the internet and since Fastly looks to be the leader of that industry and is growing at a fast rate, edge computing may be the next big thing in tech after software-as-a-service. As internet traffic is much higher than average because of the quarantine and work from home movement, Fastly is doing immense favors for the internet and is continuing to make internet traffic faster and more efficient for everyone.
